MAJ: Mammoth Substation IO Checks
By Deftec
The Challenge
Major Electrical needed comprehensive input/output validation and verification for their Mammoth substation protection system. The client required a PCS engineer to conduct thorough IO checks on Schweitzer SEL-751 feeder protection relays and associated intelligent protection devices (IPDs), ensuring all field connections and data paths were properly labelled and functionally sound before commissioning.
Our Approach
Deftec deployed a senior PCS engineer to conduct systematic IO checks across the Mammoth substation, focusing on protection relay and IPD configuration validation. Our work included development of PCS test sheets, basic data connectivity verification to protection relays and field devices, and comprehensive tag labelling—establishing a clear data trail for future maintenance and troubleshooting. Rather than undertaking code development, we concentrated on the critical groundwork: ensuring every IO point was properly documented, connected, and verified against design specifications.
The Outcome
The substation IO validation was completed with full documentation and labelling in place, providing Major Electrical with confidence in their protection system’s readiness for operation. Clear, traceable IO records now support ongoing maintenance and any future system modifications.
