Moranbah North Mine: Fibre Optic Network Expansion

By Deftec

Communications

The Challenge

Anglo American’s Moranbah North Mine required comprehensive fibre optic infrastructure works across multiple overhead line extensions and splicing points to support expanded communications capacity. The project involved coordinated fibre splicing, termination, and extension work across five separate circuit routes, demanding skilled technicians and careful coordination across the mining operation.

Our Approach

Deftec deployed a dedicated team comprising an Electrical/Communication Technician supervisor and a Communications Technician on extended 12-hour day shifts to execute the full scope of works. The project encompassed 3x96-core overhead fibre splicing from the Main Distribution Centre (MDC) to Sub 900, extension splicing across OH608, OH902, and OH811 overhead routes, and rectification of existing splicing issues across multiple pole locations. Our team worked methodically through five distinct project references to ensure each splice, termination, and extension met the mine’s operational and safety standards.

The Outcome

The engagement demonstrates Deftec’s capability to manage labour-intensive, technically demanding communications infrastructure work in remote mining environments. By pairing experienced supervision with qualified communications technicians, we delivered the expertise needed to expand Moranbah North’s network backbone reliably.
