Moranbah North Mine: Fibre Route Recording & Network Optimisation
By Deftec
The Challenge
Anglo American’s Moranbah North Mine needed a comprehensive audit and optimisation of its optical fibre network infrastructure. With legacy patch cables and undocumented routing creating inefficiencies, the site required accurate mapping of its communications network and strategic recommendations to establish geographically diverse links that could support critical infrastructure resilience.
Our Approach
Deftec deployed a dedicated Communications Technician on a 7/7 roster basis to conduct full optical network tracing and site survey work. We identified the most appropriate recording method for the site’s fibre layout, developed a prioritised mapping plan based on infrastructure criticality, and created comprehensive drawings in collaboration with the client’s engineering partner (Waterline). Beyond documentation, we recommended infrastructure improvements to establish redundant pathways for critical systems and removed legacy cabling to streamline the network layout.
The Outcome
The project delivered a complete, current record of Moranbah North’s fibre network—essential for operational planning, fault diagnosis, and future expansion. By establishing geographically diverse links and optimising the cable infrastructure, the site gained improved network resilience and clearer visibility of its communications backbone for ongoing maintenance and upgrades.
