Kestrel Coal: Life of Mine Electrical Labour Support

PLC Underground Mining Coal Processing Power Systems

The Challenge

Kestrel North Coal Mine required experienced electrical labour to support critical life-of-mine initiatives across multiple work streams from November 2025 through April 2026. The project encompassed RTGM (real-time grinding mill) installation and commissioning, conveyor signal line upgrades, WiFi infrastructure deployment, and pump VB online installation---all requiring coordinated effort from skilled electricians and trades support working in an underground coal mining environment.

Our Approach

Deftec mobilised a dedicated team of experienced electricians and apprentices to Kestrel’s Crinum site, structured to scale across six months as project phases intensified. We provided on-site electrical supervision through our coordinators, maintained flexible FIFO and DIDO (fly-in/drive-in) staffing options to match site demands, and ensured all personnel held the essential certifications for underground coal mining---including Aquila induction, Section 11 (self-rescue equipment), electrical trade health and safety, and underground experience where required. By partnering with Kestrel’s engineering team and managing our own mobilisation and travel logistics, we delivered uninterrupted labour support aligned to their operational rhythm.

The Outcome

The engagement secured a labour commitment valued at approximately $454,000 across a six-month execution window, with our roster actively deployed from October 2025 onwards. The structured team composition---two supervisors, four experienced electricians, and six apprentices with scheduled increases through peak periods---enabled Kestrel to progress critical commissioning and infrastructure work without recruitment delays or skill gaps.
